World Humanitarian Day honors humanitarian aid workers for their work in helping people throughout the world. Its purpose is to increase knowledge of various humanitarian activities and honor those whom have died in the pursuit of humanitarian causes.
Established by the United Nations in December 2008 under the General Assembly A/63/L.49 and observed the following year. August 19 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the Canal Hotel in Iraq, in which 22 people lost their lives including that of Sergio Vieira de Mello, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Representative of the Secretary General to Iraq.
